WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)?

Sleep apnea – also called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA – is a condition that occurs when the movement of air from the nose and mouth to the lungs is difficult and less oxygen enters the blood. This lack of oxygen leads to frequent awakenings during the night. As a result, you accumulate a lack of restful sleep and increased sleepiness during the day.

This collapse of the airways is attributable to factors, such as muscle release of the tongue, throat and lower jaw, which keeps the airways open, preventing proper flow of air to the lungs. This leads to a lack of oxygen, which decreases the duration of deep sleep

These respiratory events can occur several times per hour. The severity of sleep apnea is identified by the number of times the events occur. Such an interruption of healthy sleep tires the heart and can make your condition worse.

OSA affects 20 million adult men and women in the United States. In Canada, according to the Quebec Respiratory Health Foundation, an estimated 3.25 million Canadians – including 700,000 Quebecers – suffer from sleep apnea.
